Dr. Henry Omoregie EGHAREVBA is a seasoned Research Scientist and Administrator. He is an Associate Research Professor and Head of Consultancy Services, at the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) Abuja.

Born on 13th June 1971, he attended the Baptist High School Benin city, Edo State, from 1982-1987, and gained admission to study Biochemistry at the prestigious University of Benin in 1988. He obtained his B.Sc. (Hons.) Biochemistry degree with a Second Class upper-division, in 1992, after winning the university’s scholarship prize for the Best Biochemistry Student in 1991. His quest for greater knowledge led him to obtain M.Sc. (Analytical Chemistry) and PhD (Organic Chemistry) from the renowned University of Abuja from 2004-2006 and 2007-2012 respectively.

He began his early professional career as a Production Chemist at Century Dyes & Chemical (CDC), a division of the Churchgate conglomerate, Lagos, in 1995, after undergoing the mandatory National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) service in 1993 at the Ariforce Boys Military School Jos, Plateau State. He rose to the Position of Senior Production Chemist in 1998, and later joined Ibafon Oil Limited (IOL), formerly Ibachem (Ibafon Chemicals) Limited, Lagos, as a Sales Representative and Product Manager. While serving at IOL, he obtained his MBA degree from the Lagos State University (LASU) in the year 2000.

His interest in health innovations and growing concern for poor access to health care by Nigerians, led him to take up appointment with the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), Abuja, in 2002. Since joining the Institute, Dr. Egharevba has served in several capacities in Research and Administration. He was Head of Department of Medicinal Plant Research and Traditional Medicine (2012-2014), Desk Officer, African Network for Drugs and Diagnostic Innovation (ANDI) West Africa Regional Hub (2015-date), Associate Professor and Head, Consultancy Services (2016-date) as well as member of different Management & Technical Committees. He was part of the project management team that established the Nigerian CD4 lymphocyte baseline studies where he served as the project administrator/secretary in 2008. As Head of Department in 2012, he designed and implemented the national ethnobotanical/ethnomedicinal survey project using Nasarawa State as a case study, and was part of the R&D team that developed new medicinal products resulting in five NIPRD trademarks/patents. He pioneered the resuscitation of NIPRD Cooperative Society in 2007, and in recognition of his sterling personality and excellent performance, he was awarded “Best Staff” in 2008, and “Excellent Service Award” in 2018. He is also recipient of several performance-based recognition and commendations from the management of the Institute from 2002-date.

An astute scientist and erudite scholar, he has isolated and characterized several organic compounds from natural sources, and published about 100 publications (peer-reviewed journal, technical reports, contribution to book chapter and conference papers/abstracts) between 2002 and 2018. His research interests are on communicable tropical diseases including tuberculosis (TB), HIV/AIDS, malaria, and skin diseases, with special focus on antimicrobials resistance (AMR), and non-communicable diseases including diabetes, sickle cell disease and cancer. He is also interested in health systems and governance, material chemistry, computational chemistry and nanotechnology research. He specializes in medicinal plants and phytochemistry research, medicinal chemistry, preclinical drug development, analytical and bioanalytical assay development, and Health systems research with focus on supply/distribution chain strengthening. He is skilled in project design and management, R&D planning, as well as traditional/herbal medicine research and development.

He has mentored several young scientists, and was a visiting lecturer to Nile University Abuja formerly Nigerian-Turkish Nile University (2012/13), Nasarawa State Univeristy Keffi (2014/15), and University of Abuja (2018). In order to excel at this, he later studied and obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the highly esteemed National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) Kaduna (2014-2015) during his sabbatical leave at Nasarawa State Univeristy Keffi (NSUK). He is an Associate Editor of Ewemen Journals and reviewer to several academic journals.

Dr. Egharevba is an affiliate of several professional bodies including the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), UK, Chemical Society of Nigeria (MCSN), the Institute of chartered Chemists of Nigeria (FICCON), and the Secretary General of West African Network of Natural Products Research Scientists (WANNPRES). He is passionate about promoting healthy living and well-being for all through improved access to quality health care services, as well as promoting inclusive and equitable quality education.
